“The southern flying squirrel is a well-documented species that has maintained a small presence in eastern third of Kansas, though little is generally known about them. This is partially due to the flying squirrel’ s nocturnal nature. However, they have been identified as a Species in Need of Conservation (SINC), highlighting the importance of productive woodland habitat.“

“Prescribed fire is a habitat improvement practice that, when used well, can address a host of issues in a cost effective and holistic manner. Running a large prescribed fire requires perfect conditions, ample coordination, and most importantly, time for safe implementation.”

"Kansas grasslands are no longer intact when they become contaminated by the seeds of invasive trees.  Monitoring is recommended to evaluate the proximity of intact grassland sites to seed sources, and their proximity to the expanding regional threat of woody encroachment.”
